The sun was still low, glimmering gold between the trees as we took our first steps on the cobblestone road. Crisp air, a crystal-clear sky, and that delightful first touch of cold spring sunshine that makes everything just a bit more beautiful. Perfect hiking weather. I don’t think
Villers-La-Ville and its Abbey need any introduction for those who’ve already planted their hiking boots in a few forests. It’s a beautiful historic site — a bit overrun with tourists these days, but still very much worth the visit.
The path started wide and paved, a gentle uphill slope lined with stately trees. To the right, a grassy bank; to the left, a softly rustling slope covered in fallen leaves. A bit further on stood a small chapel — a charming little landmark in the woods where the road splits. No traffic, no crowds, just the peace of nature. From there, the trail turned unpaved — a narrower path winding through the forest. Sunbeams pierced through the branches, casting long shadows over the moss. The ground felt springy underfoot, with the occasional puddle mirroring the sky. The variety along the route made it all the more engaging: wide avenues, narrow forest trails, the occasional steep climb followed by a blissful descent where you could simply soak in the view. Open stretches alternated with dense woods, winding paths with straight lanes, and every now and then, a small hamlet. Never a dull moment — always something new to look at.
But here’s an important tip: **come early!** By the time we were heading back, the real crowds started rolling in. Cars in the parking lot, families, joggers, cyclists, mountain bikers, even old-timer car convoys… Villers-la-Ville is a stunning place, but if you want to experience the calm and magic of the morning, set your alarm early. The early bird truly catches the best moments here — and maybe even a few juicy worms!
