Being born and raised in the Kempen, it takes quite a lot to surprise me — but this hike truly does it justice. Plenty of long forest lanes alternating with short woodland paths, and along the way you pass several interesting landmarks and nature areas. A fun and varied route to wander through. I certainly didn’t get bored for a single moment on this walk.
For the final stretch along the Nete, I recommend wearing sturdy footwear and, during tick season, long trousers. After heavy rain, boots — or even floaties — might be a good idea.
What makes this hike so enjoyable is the diversity of vegetation and scenery you encounter. I think it showcases just about everything the Kempen has to offer: pine forests, fern fields, dune landscapes, and a touch of classic Flemish architecture.
