4 Rivieren

92.5 km 210 m elevation Belgium 2020-05-13
A full-day gravel loop connecting four of Antwerp’s main waterways: the Scheldt, Rupel, Nete, and Demer. A mix of industry, nature, and small hidden paths — a perfect ride to experience the contrasts that define this region.

I started early near Rumst, where the Nete and the Dijle meet to form the Rupel. Morning light reflected on the calm water, with only a few rowers and fishermen around. The route followed the dikes for a while — flat, open, and quiet — before diving into the green stretches of the Nete valley.

Past Duffel and Lier, the path switched between paved levees and soft gravel tracks. Fields, bridges, and the occasional old bunker along the canal gave the ride a sense of timelessness. The clouds came and went, creating that typical Belgian mix of bright light and deep contrast.

Near Boom and the industrial zones of Hemiksem, the scenery changed — cranes, factories, and the echo of metal against the river. A reminder that this is still the working heart of Antwerp. The huge water tower and reflections on the canal added a cinematic touch to the ride.

Heading north, I followed the Scheldt back through forest sections and along the old defense line. Poppies appeared on the dikes — bright red spots against the green. The last stretch was calm and steady, gravel paths cutting through fields and woods before looping back to Rumst.

By the time I finished, the legs were tired, but the mix of nature and raw industrial scenery made it completely worth it. Four rivers, one loop, endless variation.
